Care for your garment

Arctic Edge garments are made from natural fibres, including merino wool, possum fibre and silk. With the right care, they will provide many years of comfort and performance.

Washing

  • Machine wash on the Wool or Delicate cycle using the Cold water setting.
  • If your machine does not have a true cold wash, hand wash in cold water instead.
  • Turn the garment inside out.
  • Wash separately.
  • Use a wool detergent.
  • Do not use fabric softener or bleach.

Why do we recommend a cold wash?

We recommend using your washing machine's Cold setting rather than selecting 30°C.

Although many people consider 30°C to be a cold wash, some washing machines are not perfectly calibrated and may wash at temperatures higher than the selected setting. Because natural wool fibres are sensitive to heat, higher-than-expected temperatures can increase the risk of felting or shrinkage.

Using a true cold wash provides the greatest margin of safety.

Spinning

A low to moderate spin cycle is recommended to remove excess water before drying.

Removing most of the water before drying helps the garment retain its shape and reduces the risk of stretching while wet.

If hand washing, gently squeeze out excess water or roll the garment in a towel to absorb moisture. Avoid wringing the garment, as this may damage the fibres or stretch the garment out of shape.

Drying

  • Lay flat to dry in the shade, away from heat sources (such as radiators).
  • Do not tumble dry as part of normal care.*
  • Do not iron.
  • Do not dry clean.

*Optional: Restoring Softness and Shape

If a garment has stretched slightly over time, or you would simply like to restore some of its softness and loft, you may use a tumble dryer with care.

Only place the garment in a preheated tumble dryer once it is almost dry (slightly damp, never wet). Use the lowest heat setting and tumble dry for 3-4 minutes at a time, checking the garment after each short cycle.

The gentle warmth can help the wool fibres return closer to their original shape while restoring loft to the possum fibre, making the garment feel soft and lofty again. If needed, repeat for another short cycle.

Never tumble dry a wet garment. Heat combined with excess moisture can cause wool fibres to felt, resulting in permanent shrinkage.

As washing machines and tumble dryers vary considerably, always use the gentlest settings available and check the garment after each short cycle.
